Executive Summary
Drilling Overview

  1. Process: (spans a few decades)
  • Exploration(8yrs)-seismic surveys, exploratory wells
  • Develpoment(10yrs)-build and install all facilities, machinery, pipelines, production wells
  • Production(28yrs)-prepare oil for market, maintenance of facilities and wells, install equipment for extensive oil recovery

 2.Gravel Pads and Impacts

WHY USE GRAVEL?  Gravel is used underneath all the buildings, the drill sites, the roads. . .almost everything that is brought in, so that there is stable ground on which to work. The gravel is dry, stable (built up 1.5 m), can be used year-round, prevents transfer of heat from facilities to underlying tundra and is mined locally.

            IMPACTS OF GRAVEL PADS

  • Direct cover of tundra vegetation
  • Deposition of road dust on snow and vegetation next to road
  • Impoundments from blockage of surface water flow - creates ponds
  • Direct disturbance of wildlife by vehicle traffic

 3.3 Main Environmental Concerns

  • TRANSPORTATION of equipment to and from sites
  • BUILDING of pads, foundations, and pits at sites
  • DISPOSAL of wastes or removal of equipment and materials after drilling

 4.ESTIMATES: #'s #'s #'s

***numbers are constantly changing depending on  technology and who performs the number crunching***

  •  in-place resources: 11.6 - 31.5 Billion Barrels of Oil (with 95% and 5% probablilities respectfully: 95% chance that there will be over 11.6 BBO and a 5% chance that there will be greater than 31.5 BBO)
  • technically recoverable: 4.3 - 11.8 BBO ( 95% and 5%)
  • 85% of the technically recoverable oil is concentrated in western part of 1002 Area: in the undeformed rock area (rocks are generally horizontal vs deformed rocks where they are folded and faulted)
  • over 10 plays were assessed: they are all distributed around 1002 area (a play is a volume of rock that contains similar geological parameters)
  • Market Price : price to find, develop, produce and transport to market (lower 48)
  • 2.5 BBO economically recoverable @ $18/barrel
  • 3.2 BBO economically recoverable @ $20/barrel
