Alaskan Natives believe drilling would create more independence and econoic gain, thus justifying opening up 1002 Area. Arctic Power, an non-profit coalition represents the oil companies and justifies the drilling because it would create oil royalties and jobs. Arctic Power estimates 735,000 jobs would be created.
In the Eskimo village of Kaktovik, population 256, the opportunity for oil drilling is welcomed. It would increase tax revenue and oil royalties which would pay for new schools, home improvements, and the education oppotunities for native Alaskans to leave their village. This drilling would also allow them to compete in the business world that seems to be passing them by.
Koktovik recieved a $25,000 dollar grant by the State of Alaska to educate people about ANWR, build a website and a calendar.
According to a survey completed by this grant, 70% strongly agree or agree that the quality of life in Koktovik would diminish if oil development ceases.
