  • Today, the U.S. imports ~52% of its oil- this is a dangerous situation for petroleum-based economy- leaves us very vulnerable to oil price changes and instability of the supply. (Dr. Montanez)
  • If the 1002 Area were open today, oil production would probably begin by about 2010.
  • Production would likely peak around 2030 at about 1 million barrels per day, just under 4% of our projected domestic energy needs.

1002 Area
President Bush is currently concerned with the recent conflict with Iraq.  If the United States does decide to go to war, the imports of oil will cease and new means of oil deposits or energy sources will have to be evaluated.  This is one reason President Bush uses to encourage the exploration for oil in the 1002 Area.  This debate over oil will continue until the President, Congress, and the general public come to a conclusion.

Bush claims, "his plan (to drill in 1002 Area) promotes conservation, increases funding for energy efficiency and renewable energy programs, and supports the development of fuel-efficient vehicles."
